A jewel in the Irish Sea with miles of un-crowded beaches, lovely enchanted glens and totally unspoilt countryside, the Isle of Man is truly blessed with outstanding scenery combined with a calm, relaxed lifestyle. Douglas, the capital is a typical Victorian style seaside town set in an expansive sandy bay and the starting point for the steam and electric railways that transport yopu North to Laxey, Ramsey and Snaefel or South through wonderful country and coastal areas to the horseshoe shaped beach town of Port Erin.

One of the most prominent form of transport in Douglas that links each end of the resort is the horse drawn trams that “clip clop” at a leisurely pace throughout theday and early evening.

Take the electric train to the summit of Snaefel, the island’s highest peak, but make sure to stop off en-route in Laxey and enjoy the majesty of the Lady Isabella, the most impressive working water wheel which is now over 153 years old –sight not to be missed.

Enjoy the casino in Douglas or take in a show at the recently re-furbished Gaiety Theatre – enjoy the famous Manx hospitality at the many pubs, bars or hotels that feature regular seasonal entertainment.

PLACES TO VISIT

Port Erin
The largest seaside resort in the South, with self-catering and hotel accommodation. A lovely promenade overlooks one of the most attractive safe and sandy beaches on the island, but with stunning walks on the hills that surround the bay. Also the home of the 18 hole Rowany Golf club which is very hospitable, and welcomes visitors from overseas.

Port St Mary
Just round the headland from Port Erin, a genuine working fishing village with child friendly beaches and an interesting harbour. You will find good selection of local pubs that often serve the daily catch for lunch or dinner.

Peel
Dominated by the impressive Peel Castle – open to visiters – and the ancient capital of the island with excellent beaches and harbour scenes. The home of the luscious Davison’s ice cream – a treat not to be missed.

Ramsey
An important commercial town in the North of the island that combines with a working fishing fleet, well worth a visit to enjoy the combined parklands an promenades of this interesting area, that can be reached on the regular electric train service from Douglas that travels the 17 mile route via the glens and rugged coast line.
